SUMMARY:January Community Forum: Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Please attend the next community forum of the Naperville Township Democratic Organization to be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday\, January 28th\, at the City of Naperville Municipal Center\, 400 S. Eagle Street\, in Meeting Room A on the lower level. \nWe will hear a two part presentation on climate change: Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington\, “Climate Justice: Global to Local”\, followed by Greg Hubert\, “Citizen’s Climate Lobby: Political Will for a Livable Planet”. \nSylvia Hood Washington \nDr. Washington is a member of the State of Illinois Commission on Environmental Justice and Greg Hubert\, Naperville Township resident\, is a volunteer with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby\, which is advocating for a “Carbon Fee and Dividend” proposal with all revenues distributed back to people. \nFrom a recent World Bank publication\, unless efforts are made to rein in carbon emissions\, to upgrade flood defenses\, and to promote more heat-tolerant crops\, “climate change could result in an additional 100 million people living in extreme poverty by 2030.” \nNeed more info?  Contact Dianne McGuire\, 630-420-8502.

SUMMARY:Highlighting the Damage Being Done by Governor Rauner's Agenda
DESCRIPTION:If you are able to get away for mid-day events\, you will be glad you took a few hours to attend the press conference described below.  The NTDO has many friends on the panel: Nancy Chen is a Naperville Township Resident and long-time friend of the NTDO\, Ron Allen and Lynn Pries are NTDO PCs\, and our own Bill Habel will be moderating the discussion.  Not to mention the value of showing support for the many\, many people who are being harmed by the Governor’s intransigent anti-union single-mindedness (see\, e.g.\, here\, here\, here\, here and many others). \n\n  \nPRESS ADVISORY \nContact: Rianne Hawkins\, Illinois AFL-CIO\nPhone: 217.492.4062 (office)/217.299.1315 (cell) \nWhat: Community leaders\, union members and members of the clergy come together to discuss the effects that Governor Rauner’s anti-middle class agenda will have on DuPage County. \nWhen: Friday\, October 30\, 2015 at 10:00am \nWhere: Laborers Local 68 Union Hall (660 E. North Avenue in Lombard) \nParticipating in the news conference will be Dan Allen (Executive Director of the Construction Industry Service Corporation)\, Dave Menchetti (attorney)\, Nancy Chen\, (former Midwest Regional Director of the Women’s Bureau\, US Department of Labor)\, Ronald Allen (retired small business owner)\, Dr. Lynn Pries (United Methodist Church). Also joining the panel will be State Senator Tom Cullerton and State Representative Deb Conroy. \n\n  \nPRESS RELEASE \nContact: Rianne Hawkins\, Illinois AFL-CIO\nPhone: 217.492.2624 (office)/217.299.1315 (cell) \nBusiness Leaders and Community Activists Highlight\nthe Problems with Governor Rauner’s Agenda \nToday\, community leaders\, state leaders and union members gathered together to discuss the effects that the so-called reforms that Governor Rauner is pushing would have on the DuPage County area. \nGovernor Rauner has been stalling budget negotiations by pushing his so-called “turnaround agenda” for months at the Capitol and getting nowhere with lawmakers. Many legislators have refused to support his agenda\, citing the fact that the effects would devastate the middle class in Illinois. \nThe panel discussed topics ranging from the impact of further reforms to the Worker’s Compensation Act\, the elimination of prevailing wage and the devastating effects of the continued budget impasse on working families and the most vulnerable in our society. These anti-middle class\, anti-family policies will have a profound impact on DuPage County communities. \n“I have been very troubled by the path which Governor Rauner has chosen to take\,” said Ronald Allen\, a retired small business owner and Board Member of the Quad County Chamber of Commerce. “This continued instability in state finances is exactly what businesses do not what to see when they are looking to relocate to Illinois.” \nAs a result of his continued insistence on curbing labor and workplace protections\, people who rely on currently unfunded state services are being hurt. Some agencies have even been forced to close their doors due to the uncertainty of the State’s budget. \n“It is clear that the Governor had prioritized his anti-union agenda over the needs of the most vulnerable in our community\,” said Dr. Lynn Pries\, a minister with the United Methodist Church. \nAnother casualty of the State budget impasse involves the disbursement\, or lack thereof\, of funds to local governments. These local governments cannot adequately plan for future road and infrastructure improvements because they cannot plan on when that money will be disbursed. \n“Governor Rauner’s continued advocacy for his anti-union agenda is short sighted and just plain wrong for Illinois\,” said Dan Allen\, Director of the Construction Industry Service Corporation. “His obsession with breaking the unions is not only already hurting our economy\, but will further erode wages for middle class families here in DuPage County.” \nEach of the panelists urged the Governor to stop holding the budget hostage in order to blackmail the state into adopting his so called reforms. These reforms would have a devastating effect not only on the communities in DuPage County\, but for the rest of the State of Illinois\, as well. \n# # # \n  \n

SUMMARY:Staged Reading of Draft "Mosque Alert" Script - at North Central College
DESCRIPTION:You may recall our May Community Forum\, at which Jamil Khoury from Silk Road Rising screened a short video introducing us to the characters from their “Mosque Alert” play and then led us in a (too brief!) discussion.  It was a fun and challenging evening. \nApropos of that\, Dianne and I received the following email the other day from Malik Gillani (Silk Road Rising’s Executive Director\, who also joined us that evening)\, inviting us all to attend the next step in the play’s growing to maturity. \n(UPDATE: Oh\, here’s a PDF brochure Malik attached to his email\, but which I missed somehow the first time around.) \nWe should go! \n\n  \nDear Dianne and Steve! \nHope this email finds you in good spirits! I’m writing today to encourage you and our friends at the Naperville Democrats to attend a staged reading of the draft script of “Mosque Alert.” Our presentation for you included sharing a video for play development. The staged reading is to share the entire playscript and to solicit audience feedback. \nThe reading will take place at North Central College (Madden Theater\, 171 E Chicago Ave\, Naperville\, IL 60540) on Tuesday\, October 20th at 7pm. Tickets are free but reservations are required. To reserve tickets\, visit: http://www.silkroadrising.org/events/mosque-alert-a-staged-reading  \nHere’s the play description: \nInspired by the “Ground Zero Mosque” controversy in New York City\, and developed\, in part\, via live and online conversations and community events\, Mosque Alert tells the story of three fictional families living in Naperville\, Illinois\, whose lives are interrupted by a proposed Islamic Center on the site of a beloved local landmark. Mosque Alert explores the intersections of zoning\, civil rights\, and Islamophobia\, with humor\, family drama\, and raw honesty.  \n“Mosque Alert” comes out of a civic engagement process we began in 2011 and one which continues through next year. In fact\, Silk Road Rising is in residency in Naperville through 2016 as we further develop this play with audience participation. A brochure describing our project is attached to this email. \nThank you and hope to see you at North Central College on Tuesday\, October 20th at 7pm\, \nMalik \nMalik Gillani\nExecutive Director\nSILK ROAD RISING

DESCRIPTION:The Bill Foster and Stephanie Kifowit campaigns are working together this Saturday (10AM to 2PM) to collect signatures and get their candidates on the ballot for next fall’s elections.  Stephanie sent around an announcement\, which I posted here (image at the bottom of this message)\, and immediately below you’ll see a notice from Ben Huntley\, Bill Foster’s Campaign Manager. \nIf you can come out\, even for an hour or two\, to help Bill and Stephanie with this necessary work\, that would be great\, and warmly appreciated.  If you can’t make Saturday but want to help at another time over the next few weeks\, that works\, too.  Either way\, please let Stephanie know how you can help (email\, or 630-791-0484) so she can know how many packets to prepare. \nThank you! \n\n \nHere’s Ben’s message: \nGood afternoon! \nMy name is Ben Huntley\, and I am Congressman Bill Foster’s Campaign Manager here in Illinois’ 11th Congressional District. \nI’m writing to you today because we’ve got a little over a month to go to collect signatures to get Bill and other Democrats on the ballot for the Primary Election. SUMMARY:September NTDO Community Forum (NOTE: Wednesday\, this month only)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: We are gathering on Wednesday – this month only. \nThis month’s meeting is a Campaign Strategy discussion around what worked and what didn’t work last fall and in the spring.  Members are encouraged to bring their observations and ideas.  Here’s a note from Steve Bosco\, who will be leading the discussion: \nAll NTDO Members: \nAt Dianne’s request\, I will be leading a discussion of NTDO Campaign Strategy with all members of the NTDO at the September monthly meeting next Wednesday (9/23/2015). If anyone has any additions or changes to make to this list\, please let me know and I’ll be sure to include them– by Tuesday\, if possible. \nBecause we will not have any other speakers this month\, we will have the opportunity for an open discussion of these topics. Please be prepared to point out our strengths and weaknesses and come with suggestions to improve our organization. \nHere is the tentative outline and\, again\, let me know what else we should discuss concerning campaigns\, strategies\, and organizational issues. \nDon’t forget that for this month only we’re meeting on WEDNESDAY\, SEPTEMBER 23. See you then. \nThanks\, \nSteve Bosco\nPC\, precinct 58 \n[I won’t reproduce the outline here.  Steve sent it in email to all of us…   Steve K]
