DESCRIPTION:You may recall our May Community Forum\, at which Jamil Khoury from Silk Road Rising screened a short video introducing us to the characters from their “Mosque Alert” play and then led us in a (too brief!) discussion.  It was a fun and challenging evening. \nApropos of that\, Dianne and I received the following email the other day from Malik Gillani (Silk Road Rising’s Executive Director\, who also joined us that evening)\, inviting us all to attend the next step in the play’s growing to maturity. \n(UPDATE: Oh\, here’s a PDF brochure Malik attached to his email\, but which I missed somehow the first time around.) \nWe should go! \n\n  \nDear Dianne and Steve! \nHope this email finds you in good spirits! I’m writing today to encourage you and our friends at the Naperville Democrats to attend a staged reading of the draft script of “Mosque Alert.” Our presentation for you included sharing a video for play development. The staged reading is to share the entire playscript and to solicit audience feedback. \nThe reading will take place at North Central College (Madden Theater\, 171 E Chicago Ave\, Naperville\, IL 60540) on Tuesday\, October 20th at 7pm. Mosque Alert explores the intersections of zoning\, civil rights\, and Islamophobia\, with humor\, family drama\, and raw honesty.  \n“Mosque Alert” comes out of a civic engagement process we began in 2011 and one which continues through next year. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n \n\nWe learned of this event via our friend\, Reverend Doctor Lynn Pries\, President of the Naperville Interfaith Leaders Association\, who writes: \nI invite you to participate in a solidarity event in support of the Sikh community after one of their members was assaulted in Darien by a young man who taunted him and among other words\, called out\, “Terrorist\, go back to your country\, Bin Laden!”  A more complete account is found on the following link: \nhttp://sikhcoalition.org/advisories/2015/chicago-sikh-american-assaulted-in-hate-crime-last-night \nOn Monday afternoon\, Robert Berlin\, the DuPage County States Attorney has initiated a hate crimes investigation of the incident and the suspect\, a juvenile\, has been charged with a hate crime. \nThe Solidarity Event will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday\, September 20 at the Naperville Islamic Center\, 2844 W. DESCRIPTION:Let’s consider what we’ve seen in the news from July of 2014…about a year ago…to April\, 2015…regarding the use of what appears to be continued and egregious use of excessive force by the police when trying to interact or arrest African American men\, in particular: \n\nJuly\, 2014….Staten Island\, NY…Eric Garner dies because of the apparent use of a “chokehold”\nAugust\, 2014…teenager Michael Brown was shot by officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson\, MO\nNovember\, 2014…12 year old Tamir Rice\, playing with a toy pistol\, was shot by police in Cleveland\, OH\nApril\, 2015…Walter Scott was shot in the back during a routine traffic stop in North Charleston\, SC\nApril\, 2015…Freddie Gray dies while being held in police custody and enduring a “rough ride” in Baltimore\, MD\n\nWe could go back a few years\, as well\, to the tragic shooting in February of 2012 in Florida of Trayvon Martin who was killed as he walked home from a convenience store by a community watch volunteer.  Although his death did not involve the police directly\, it sparked a national conversation regarding the disproportionate arrests of young black men and their safety on the streets. \nWhat is excessive force?  According to a recent ABC News piece that aired on July\, 2014\, written by Sascha Sagan\, “there’s no concrete definition of excessive force….many police use a “force continuum” to guide their actions: \n\nFirst polite requests…\nthen demands…\nthen chemical sprays…\nthen physical force…\nthen lethal force.\n\nOfficers should only use the level of force that’s being used (or is being threatened to be used) by suspects against the police… \n27-Year Veteran Officer Willie Mayes \nFormer Aurora Police Chief Bill Powell \nSo\, let’s see what it’s like “Behind the Badge” when we hear from recently retired Aurora Chief of Police\, Bill Powell\, and Willie Mayes\, veteran law enforcement officer with 27 years of experience and 2014 Democratic candidate for Kane County Sheriff.  These gentlemen\, both African American\, will help us to more fully appreciate and understand the current national discussion regarding race and the use of what some would say is excessive police force. \nWe’ll plan for time for Q & A at the end of their presentation.  Please come!

DESCRIPTION:Silk Road Rising (formerly known as Silk Road Theatre Project) creates live theatre and online videos that tell stories through primarily Asian American and Middle Eastern American lenses. In representing communities that intersect and overlap\, we advance a polycultural worldview. \nThe community is invited to attend the next meeting of the Naperville Township Democratic Organization to be held at 7:30 PM on Thursday\, May 21st at the Naperville Municipal Center\, lower level. \nFollowing a short business meeting\, we will hear a very special presentation by Silk Road Rising\, a nonprofit theater in Chicago. At Silk Road Rising\, they use arts to generate conversations to build greater cultural understanding and support for Asian and Middle Eastern Americans. We will view a 20 minute online video play – Mosque Alert – which is centered on the story of two fictional Naperville families whose lives are torn apart when a new mosque is proposed for their neighborhood. Following the viewing\, Jamil Khoury\, Artistic Director (and creator of the “Mosque Alert” project) at Silk Road Rising\, will lead the “talkback session” during which participants will have an opportunity to weigh in on the characters’ motivations and behavior\, with the goal of better understanding current debates surrounding the locating of Islamic houses of worship.  (Silk Road Rising’s Executive Director Malik Gillani will also be joining us.) \nFor more information\, call Dianne at 630-420-8502.
