SUMMARY:Stand Against Gov Rauner's Plan to Undermine the Middle Class
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Associated Press \nPlease attend Tuesday’s Naperville City Council meeting to stand against the Governor’s so-called “Turnaround Plan.” \nThe agenda for Tuesday night’s Naperville City Council meeting includes a vote (by the “lame duck” board) on Governor Rauner’s so-called “Turnaround Plan\,” which looks to most of us like a race to the bottom\, pulling the rug out from underneath working Illinois families. \nOther communities have successfully stood together against the Governor’s destructive agenda.  Now it’s our turn. \n\n  \n(click to enlarge) \nThe invitation at right\, from our friends at the Construction Industry Service Corporation\, captures it well.  [Click on it to enlarge.] \nOther resources: \n\nIL Governor Rauner Gets $750\,000 Tax Break\, Proposes Slashing Services to Middle Class and Poor\nRauner:  You Get Injured on the Job\, It’s Gonna Be Your Problem.\nAusterity in Illinois? Critics Slam ‘Morally Reprehensible’ Budget Proposal\n\n  \nThe political world of Illinois according to Bruce\, is controlled by insiders –  the kind of people who make deals “for the insiders against the taxpayers.”  Among these inside deals\, Rauner identifies “details\, the work rules\, the regulations\, and the laws.”  In truth\, those most vulnerable are the ones protected by work rules\, regulations\, the laws\, things like workman’s’ compensation\, safety standards\, medical assistance programs\, fair wage\, etc.  The governor’s elimination of these impediments to unbridled capitalism seem unlikely to assist the most vulnerable or even those chasing employment and fair pay for a family of four. – John Dillon \n\nFinally\, let me attach some text from Dianne on the importance of what’s going on here: \nOn the agenda for the Naperville City Council is a resolution supporting the: \n\nRepeal of prevailing wage\nCreation of a Right to Work Zone…same as Governor’s Rauner’s “Empowerment Zones”\nDilution of collective bargaining rights\n\nSo\, what’s an “empowerment zone”? The governor would like to create areas across the state where voters could decide if workers in their communities should be forced to join a union or pay associated dues. A related advisory vote on the April 7th Hinsdale District 86 ballot asked voters to weigh in on whether teachers should be able to strike. Guess what? It passed with 61% support! At the same time\, Hinsdale voters rejected Tea Party candidates and returned the majority control on their school board to more moderate folks. To see voters holding these diametrically opposed positions at the same time underscores the dangerous appeal of “good spin” and where it can lead. \nOther ideas promoted by the Governor during his February State of the State speech included the following: \n\nCalling for a ban on political donations by unions\nGiving taxpayers a say in the collective bargaining process at the local level\nEnding the requirement that prevailing union wages be paid to workers on state and municipal construction projects\n\nPublic sector unions will be especially vulnerable to these attacks\, inasmuch as their members’ occupations are supported by taxpayer funds. \nHow would this work? If a unit of local government (county\, municipal\, or other unit of local government…e.g. community colleges\, school districts\, etc.) supports such a resolution\, it could then be placed as a referendum on the next ballot to decide “whether business (school district) employees should be forced to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment.” \nAbout 15% of the state’s workforce (831\,000) are members of a union. An additional 49\,000 workers were identified as having no union affiliation\, although their jobs were covered by a union contract. These are the “fair share” fee payers…and they are at the heart of the right to work movement. \nWe need you to come forward on behalf of “workplace democracy”! As a member of the IEA for 27 years\, I treasured my collective voice\, expressed by the leaders of my union. One of the greatest frustrations for so many in the workforce is that they have no “voice”…no one to express – safely – the issues related to fairness\, safety\, respect\, etc. that arise in the working lives of each of us. Being a member of a union provides that “voice”…which is why I call it “workplace democracy.” \nSo\, what is it we are hoping you will consider doing? \nShow up at the Naperville Municipal Center at 7 PM…and\, if you plan to speak\, about 6:30 PM…If you plan to speak\, the agenda item is “N-2”. Your presence in support of your fellow union members and Democratic progressives is vital to the success of this grass-roots “push back” to this proposal. Send me an email if we can count on your support and presence on  Tuesday: Dianne@napervilledemocrats.org

DESCRIPTION:ERA Opponent Phyllis Schlafly\, back in the day Looking for a way to get politically involved and participate in our democracy? Attend the next community forum of the Naperville Township Democratic Organization to be held at 7:30 PM on Thursday\, October 30th\, at the City of Naperville Municipal Center\, 400 S. The Illinois Legislative Veto Session in November could hold the key to its passage! \nSome background on the Equal Rights Amendment: \n\nERA passed out of Congress in 1972\n35 states subsequently ratified it\nIt fell 3 states short and Illinois was among the 15 states that failed to ratify it\nThe ERA was approved by the Illinois House last spring (Lou Lang has been the leader on this issue)\nIt has not come up for a vote in the Illinois Senate this year\nBut\, it could in the Veto Session.\n\nSo that effort is what we’ll be hearing about. \nNeed more info? SUMMARY:Benedictine University's 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act
DESCRIPTION:Benedictine University is one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in the country and we are hosting a community day on Thursday\, October 9\, 2014 to celebrate and examine “The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past\, Present and Future” topic\, within an historical context. The community day is a luncheon\, followed by a panel discussion led by Tallahassee\, Florida Mayor John Marks\, and features our evening keynote speaker\, the Rev. F. Willis Johnson of Ferguson\, MO.  I certainly hope your schedule allows you and your staff to attend in person.  Please find the press release for this event here:https://www.ben.edu/news/2014/civil-rights-event.cfm \nThe events in Ferguson\, Missouri have reminded the nation that the issue of race remains one of the most important and complex issues facing the United States.  The signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is legislatively\, the most significant action on the issue of race since the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. These two events\, the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri\, and the signing of the Civil rights Act of 1964\, frame the all-community event\, “The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past\, Present and Future.” \n\nThe day begins with a luncheon address by the Mayor of Tallahassee Florida\, John Marks.  Marks was one of the first African –Americans\, along with eight other students\, to integrate Florida State University in 1965.  He was also a very active member of the non-violent civil rights campaigns and sit in movements during the early sixties.  “Mayor Marks from his experience with the movement will share with us the feelings and experience of those who were involved in the movement when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.  He also\, as a distinguished lawyer and now Mayor of Tallahassee\, can also shed a critical light on the evolution of the act and its meaning from a political and legal perspective today” said Dr. Vincent Gaddis\, professor of History at Benedictine University and one of the organizers of the day.\nThe afternoon will feature a panel from 3:00-5:00 with Mayor Marks\, Dr. Fannie Rushing\, a professor of history at Benedictine University who was also a founding member of SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) in Chicago\, and another special guest\, Reverend F. Willis Johnson Jr. Pastor of Wellspring Church in Ferguson Missouri.  “Pastor Johnson has been one of the key leaders in Ferguson organizing non-violent protests and as a leading voice in the community creating paths of dialogue with the police and FBI” said Gaddis.   “If we want to really understand the underlying issues to what happened in Ferguson\, Pastor Johnson is an excellent person to come and share” said Dr. Philip Hardy\, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Civic Leadership at Benedictine University.\nReverend Johnson will end the day with an address at 7:00 pm.  All events will be held in the Krasa Center on the campus of Benedictine University 5700 College Road in Lisle\, Illinois.
