SUMMARY:NTDO October Community Forum: Election Prep and the ERA
DESCRIPTION:ERA Opponent Phyllis Schlafly\, back in the day Looking for a way to get politically involved and participate in our democracy? Attend the next community forum of the Naperville Township Democratic Organization to be held at 7:30 PM on Thursday\, October 30th\, at the City of Naperville Municipal Center\, 400 S. Eagle Street\, in Meeting Rooms B & C on the lower level. \nIn addition to short presentations from various Democratic candidates\, we will present poll watching instructions to our precinct committeemen/volunteers. \nAnd we’ll hear from NTDO leaders Dr. Stephanie Hughes and Karen Ide\, on a topic we all wish had been addressed positively decades ago: The Equal Rights Amendment: If Not Now\, WHEN? The Illinois Legislative Veto Session in November could hold the key to its passage! \nSome background on the Equal Rights Amendment: \n\nERA passed out of Congress in 1972\n35 states subsequently ratified it\nIt fell 3 states short and Illinois was among the 15 states that failed to ratify it\nThe ERA was approved by the Illinois House last spring (Lou Lang has been the leader on this issue)\nIt has not come up for a vote in the Illinois Senate this year\nBut\, it could in the Veto Session.\n\nSo that effort is what we’ll be hearing about. \nNeed more info? Contact Dianne McGuire\, 630-420-8502.

SUMMARY:October Social Dinner Cancelled (Sorry!)
DESCRIPTION:Update\, 10/7: Well\, it doesn’t look like we’re going to be able to make this October dinner happen after all.  Very sorry.  Stay tuned for our 2015 season\, starting in January. \nCome gather with your friends in the NTDO at our regular monthly social dinner.   It’s always an opportunity to catch up with what’s going on and get to know the people who will all be working towards making a difference\, for our community\, our State\, and our Country in the coming year. \nOn the second Thursday of each month\, we meet at a different local establishment in Naperville Township… this month\, at Indian Harvest in Naperville\, where you can enjoy “fabulous Indian cuisine.”  Everyone pays their own way\, but the fun and camaraderie are priceless. \nPlease Note: Julie will be unable to coordinate the dinner this month\, so we’ll need a volunteer to take over that responsibility.  She says\, “It’s not hard. You get RSVPs and call the restaurant to make a reservation and then get there a little early and make sure you find everyone who RSVP’ed.”  If you’re able to help out in that way just this once\, please let Steve know and he can let others know. \nHope to see you then.

SUMMARY:Benedictine University's 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act
DESCRIPTION:Benedictine University is one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in the country and we are hosting a community day on Thursday\, October 9\, 2014 to celebrate and examine “The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past\, Present and Future” topic\, within an historical context. The community day is a luncheon\, followed by a panel discussion led by Tallahassee\, Florida Mayor John Marks\, and features our evening keynote speaker\, the Rev. F. Willis Johnson of Ferguson\, MO.  I certainly hope your schedule allows you and your staff to attend in person.  Please find the press release for this event here:https://www.ben.edu/news/2014/civil-rights-event.cfm \nThe events in Ferguson\, Missouri have reminded the nation that the issue of race remains one of the most important and complex issues facing the United States.  The signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is legislatively\, the most significant action on the issue of race since the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. These two events\, the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri\, and the signing of the Civil rights Act of 1964\, frame the all-community event\, “The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past\, Present and Future.” \n\nThe day begins with a luncheon address by the Mayor of Tallahassee Florida\, John Marks.  Marks was one of the first African –Americans\, along with eight other students\, to integrate Florida State University in 1965.  He was also a very active member of the non-violent civil rights campaigns and sit in movements during the early sixties.  “Mayor Marks from his experience with the movement will share with us the feelings and experience of those who were involved in the movement when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.  He also\, as a distinguished lawyer and now Mayor of Tallahassee\, can also shed a critical light on the evolution of the act and its meaning from a political and legal perspective today” said Dr. Vincent Gaddis\, professor of History at Benedictine University and one of the organizers of the day.\nThe afternoon will feature a panel from 3:00-5:00 with Mayor Marks\, Dr. Fannie Rushing\, a professor of history at Benedictine University who was also a founding member of SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) in Chicago\, and another special guest\, Reverend F. Willis Johnson Jr. Pastor of Wellspring Church in Ferguson Missouri.  “Pastor Johnson has been one of the key leaders in Ferguson organizing non-violent protests and as a leading voice in the community creating paths of dialogue with the police and FBI” said Gaddis.   “If we want to really understand the underlying issues to what happened in Ferguson\, Pastor Johnson is an excellent person to come and share” said Dr. Philip Hardy\, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Civic Leadership at Benedictine University.\nReverend Johnson will end the day with an address at 7:00 pm.  All events will be held in the Krasa Center on the campus of Benedictine University 5700 College Road in Lisle\, Illinois.

SUMMARY:2014 Last Fling Parade
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time again…already\, can you believe it??? The Last Fling Parade on Monday\, September 1 is gearing up to be the best yet!!! This year we have four great Democratic candidates who will be marching in the parade: \nGovernor Pat Quinn\nCongressman Bill Foster\nRegina Brent\, Candidate\, County Board 5\nEd Agustin\, Candidate\, State Representative District 41\nAnd\, instead of having our own NTDO entry in the parade\, we have elected to help gather volunteers to march with our four wonderful candidates! That’s where you come in!! Please send me an email at Dianne@napervilledemocrats.org and let me know we can count on you! \nWhen to Be There: The parade kicks off at 10 AM from Naperville North HS\, so be there by 9 or so. Parking is tight…better to be dropped off. \nWhat to Wear: Unless the candidates have t-shirts for you to wear\, we recommend something blue on top\, khaki or white on the bottom. \nStarting Positions: Parade entries line up before the parade in order behind the High School.  Our candidates will be stepping off from the following starting places: Quinn:16\, Foster:65\, Brent:45\, Agustin:51 \nIf you have a preference with whom you walk\, let me know that\, too! In the end\, we’d like to provide about 20 volunteers for each of our great candidates\, as well as providing helium filled blue balloons for visual impact! This is a great way to show your Democratic support and have a good time doing it! \nAfterwards\, we are all gathering at Sullivan’s in the bar for free appetizers and drink specials! \nCome\, join us!

SUMMARY:August Social Dinner: Luigi's House on Route 59
DESCRIPTION:Come gather with your friends in the NTDO at our regular monthly social dinner.   It’s always an opportunity to catch up with what’s going on and get to know the people who will all be working towards making a difference\, for our community\, our State\, and our Country in the coming year. \nOn the second Thursday of each month\, we meet at a different local establishment in Naperville Township… this month\, at Luigi’s House in Naperville\, where you can “experience true Italian cooking and casual dining in the various rooms of my home.”  Everyone pays their own way\, but the fun and camaraderie are priceless. \nAs usual\, please respond to Julie Federico\, our monthly social coordinator\, by 2:00pm on the day of the event\, with a count of how many will be attending.  This is important in ensuring the restaurant can accommodate as many of us as possible.  You can email or text Julie at:  oldmovies@sbcglobal.net  or  630-781-2241.  Hope to see you then.

SUMMARY:Staff Dems Booth at the DuPage County Fair
DESCRIPTION:A note from NTDO Chair Dianne McGuire: \nNothing quite like the DuPage County Fair…popcorn\, corn dogs\, curly fries\, baby pigs\, the ferris wheel…and these attractions pale in comparison to the Democratic Party of DuPage County Booth! \nEach year\, the DPDC sponsors a booth at the fair and we join with our fellow township organizations to staff the booth!  This year our day is July 23…we have two openings left on the schedule and both are from 5:45 PM – 10:00 PM. \nSo\, nice cool evening breezes to help you greet folks as they stop by to chat with our Democratic volunteers!  Please consider sending me your name…so we can fill out our time slots!  The DPDC will cover the cost of the entrance fee…so\, it’s a pretty good deal!  I’ll be hoping to hear back from you soon! \nDianne

SUMMARY:March with Lisa Madigon in Wheaton's 4th of July Parade
DESCRIPTION:A note from NTDO Chair Dianne McGuire:\n\n A staff member for Lisa Madigan left a message for me yesterday asking for volunteers to walk in the Wheaton 4th of July parade.  I have done this myself in the past…Milton Township has a float and they march\, too.  It’s a shaded\, fairly short walk and actually very enjoyable! Lisa was there with her husband and children\, I believe\, the year I walked with her!\n\n\nPlease call Quiana McKenzie at 312-670-0606 directly if you are able to join our esteemed AG in this parade!  She has agreed to be our VIP for our upcoming fundraiser\, so it would be good if we could support this effort of hers\, as well!\n\n\nIf you could send me an email and let me know if you are planning to participate in this activity\, I would appreciate it.  Thanks\, everyone\, for all that you do all of the time!!\n\n[ The parade steps off at 10 AM\, so folks are meeting at 9 AM ]
