SUMMARY:Democratic Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:  \nDear Steve\, \nSick of hearing how billionaires are trying to buy the election in Illinois? Me too. Rather than sit on the sidelines\, I’m lacing up my canvassing shoes and hitting the streets with thousands of other Democrats this Saturday for the first “Dem Day of Action” of the 2014 election! \nLook up an event near you and help Democrats like Mike and Senator Durbin win in November. \nWe’re going to go door to door\, register new voters\, and have face to face conversations that we know make the difference in close elections. \nMost events start at 10AM so you’ll likely be done with your volunteer shift by lunchtime. \nJoin us at the location nearest you and let’s get to work proving that when Democrats organize\, Democrats win. \nSee you on the campaign trail\, \nZach Koutsky\nCampaign Manager | Frerichs for IllinoisPS- Our campaign is facing a crucial fundraising deadline on June 30th. Can you donate $5\, $10\, or $20 today and help us build our grassroots organization? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Howard Dean on the Affordable Care Act
DESCRIPTION:  \n Past chair of the Democratic National Committee and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean will visit Benedictine University to discuss his experiences in politics\, the future of the Democratic Party and his views on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 22 on the second floor of the Krasa Student Center. \nThe public is invited and encouraged to attend this free event. \nDean was invited to speak at Benedictine – the fastest-growing university in the country – as part of the nonpartisan Center for Civic Leadership’s (CCL) speaker series. Established in 2005 under the direction of former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan\, a 1969 Benedictine graduate and Distinguished Fellow\, the CCL seeks to shape a new generation of public leaders and responsible citizens. \n“The CCL is pleased to welcome Gov. Howard Dean to Benedictine\,” said Phil Hardy\, Ph.D.\, assistant professor of Political Science and acting CCL director. “Dean brings tremendous experience in both Democratic politics and the field of medicine. His background\, both as a medical doctor and former presidential hopeful\, will allow him to discuss health care reform and the Affordable Care Act from a unique vantage point. \n“We look forward to hearing him outline the challenges that lie ahead for the new health care law\, as well as the electoral prospects for the Democratic Party as we approach the 2014 midterms and the 2016 presidential contest\,” Hardy added. \nDean will also visit with local high school and community college students to discuss “Reforming Health Care in the United States” as part of the CCL’s Youth Government Day\, an annual event at Benedictine created to engage young people on the importance of government by examining some of the most pressing political issues affecting their country\, state and community. \nDean first entered politics in 1982 as a state representative in Vermont after transitioning from a career as a full-time practicing physician. In 1991\, he was elected governor of Vermont\, a seat he held for six terms. \nIn 2003\, he left the Vermont governorship to run for president of the United States. During this campaign\, he implemented innovative strategies for fundraising\, voter outreach and feedback through the use of the Internet and social media – techniques which were used by both parties in the 2008 election.\nDean is past chairman of the Democratic National Committee\, the Democratic Governors’ Association and the New England Governors’ Conference. \nAs chairman of the Democratic National Committee\, Dean created and implemented the “50 State Strategy\,” an ambitious effort to forgo the old approach of campaigning in traditional Democratic strongholds in favor of cultivating candidates in every state and level of government. Under his leadership\, significant resources were dedicated to revitalizing the Democratic Party by building and strengthening the organizational tools\, technological capabilities and infrastructure required to win elections while laying the foundation for a long-term Democratic majority. \nToday\, Dean serves as a senior strategic advisor and independent consultant in the Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs practice at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP\, where he specializes in the areas of health care\, early childhood development\, alternative energy and the expansion of grassroots politics around the world. He also serves as a contributor for CNBC and as a board member of the National Democratic Institute\, where he focuses on Southeast Europe and China. He is the founder of Democracy for America\, a progressive political action committee. \nBefore entering politics\, Dean earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Yale University in 1971\, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City in 1978. Upon completing his residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont\, he went on to practice internal medicine in Shelburne\, Vt. \n\n\n\n\n### \nBenedictine University is an independent Roman Catholic institution located in Lisle\, Illinois just 25 miles west of Chicago\, and has branch campuses in Springfield\, Illinois and Mesa\, Arizona. Founded in 1887\, Benedictine provides 55 undergraduate majors and 17 graduate and four doctoral programs. Benedictine University is ranked No. 1 among the country’s fastest-growing campuses between 2000-2010 in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s list of private nonprofit research institutions\, and Forbes magazine named Benedictine among “America’s Top Colleges” for the third consecutive year in 2013. Benedictine University’s Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program is listed by Crain’s Chicago Business as the fifth largest in the Chicago area in 2013.

SUMMARY:DuPage Coffee House: Flat or Fair? The Case for a Graduated Income Tax
DESCRIPTION:Flat or Fair? The Case for a Graduated Income Tax Rate\nLearn the latest about the campaign in support of the State constitutional amendment to allow a graduated income tax in Illinois (HJRCA 33/SJRCA 40).  Current tax policy is neither fair to all taxpayers nor designed to sustain funding of current services into the future. With the sunset of the temporary income tax increase\, Illinois will lose $7B over the next eighteen months. Funding for education\, public safety\, human services\, and health care will likely see continued significant reductions. When all taxes are taken into account\, as a percentage of income\, tax burden on low and middle income families is much greater than on affluent families. A fairer graduated income tax will help to balance this\, putting money back in the pockets of those most likely to spend it in the local economy on services their families need. The State Legislature must pass legislation to put a referendum on the Nov 4th general election ballot. Then the voters will decide\, embodying an important democratic principle: citizen participation. \nHilary Denk\, Co-President of the Downers Grove-Woodridge-Lisle League of Women Voters of Illinois will present the League PowerPoint on this subject and seek participant input and involvement. Martin McAlpin\, organizer for A Better Illinois Coalition\, of which the League is a member\, will suggest concrete actions to move our legislators and to support the amendment. \nRegistration for this discussion is available at \nwww.dupagecoffeehouse.org \nSponsored by the DuPage Coffeehouse Planners-an independent group of citizens.  Not sponsored by any other organization.

SUMMARY:Monthly NTDO Meeting and Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:  \nSo\, your credit/debit card has been “compromised”…your emails are peppered with poorly written solicitations from friends and relatives requesting emergency financial assistance…an elderly friend/relative has been duped into believing the “jackpot” prize will be hers with just one more check…it goes on and on!  Just this month\, I received a new credit card because mine had “problems”…a few years ago\, suspicious charges in places like Las Vegas and Los Angeles were placed on my card…once a replacement card was stolen from the post office where my mail was being held…so\, I guess\, I’m not unlike many of you: a victim of fraud!  Come find out the extent to which and the variety of ways in which residents of our state can become victimized by clever criminals who often possess uncanny levels of expertise when it comes to appealing to victims and who know how to “push our buttons” to convince us to participate in their scams! \n  \nRegina Brent\, recently retired Lead Person of Advocacy and Mediation for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office\, and Lisa Bennett\, Community Outreach and Housing Liaison for the Illinois Attorney General’s office\, will help us understand just what is actually going on out there in the world of consumer fraud.  The title of their presentation really says it all:  “Consumer Fraud…Let Me Count the Ways”.  Please come to the next NTDO meeting at 7:30 PM\, on March 27th\, in Meeting Room A on the lower level of the Naperville Municipal Center\, 400 E. Eagle Street\, Naperville\, IL 60540. \nWater and light snacks provided.
