SUMMARY:NTDO Monthly Meeting & Community Forum: Thomas Armstrong
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our monthly 7:30pm meeting… a little bit of business\, always an informative speaker on an interesting\, relevant topic\, and a time to meet and socialize with progressives who want to make positive changes in local and national politics. \nFebruary is going to be great!  In honor of Black History Month\, we are proud and honored to welcome Tom Armstrong\, NTDO Democratic election judge and author of Autobiography of a Freedom Rider (published in May\, 2011) as our featured speaker. \nIn 1955\, Mr. Armstrong\, born in Mississippi\, was 14 years old at the same time as Emmitt Till\, another 14-year-old visiting Mississippi from Chicago\, who was kidnapped\, tortured and murdered for whistling at a white woman. Three years later\, as a Tougaloo College student\, Mr. Armstrong became active in the civil rights struggle of that time. At the request of the Illinois Arts Council\, Mr. Armstrong has been speaking to civic and community groups throughout Illinois. \nAmazon Book Description \nIn the Segregated Deep South\, When Lynching and Klansmen and Jim Crow laws ruled\, there stood a line of foot soldiers ready to sacrifice their lives for the right to vote\, to enter rooms marked ‘White Only\,’ and to live with simple dignity. They were called Freedom Riders\, and Thomas M. Armstrong was one of them. This is his story. \n\n\n\nAutobiography of a Freedom Rider details Armstrong’s burning need to create social change for his fellow black citizens. This richly woven memoir\, which traces back to his great-grandparents as freed slaves\, examines the history of the Civil Rights Movement\, the devastating personal repercussions Armstrong endured for being a champion of those rights\, the sweet taste of progressive advancement in the past fifty years\, and a look ahead at the work still to be done. \nWe also expect many candidates for the upcoming consolidated election in April to be there\, as well.

SUMMARY:The Democratic Party of DuPage County President's Day Gala
DESCRIPTION:The DuPage Democrats are preparing to celebrate the biggest day of their calendar year\, the Annual Presidents’ Day Gala at the Drury Lane Oakbrook on Feb 10th. And they have lots to celebrate! \n“Just 5 short years ago at this time\,” points out Chairman Bob Peickert\, “only 18 precincts out of 740+ actually had a Democrat they could go to with any of their concerns.” At this year’s Gala\, over 17 representatives from United States Congress to DuPage Forest Preserve will be in attendance to herald the historical 2012 election in which DuPage voters finally drew a big blue swath across a large majority of its 750 precincts. \nExecutive Director Amy Rohrer had this to say about their success. “Every year we have attracted more volunteers\, more dollars\, more press. When we turned some of these races over in November\, the Democrats who had been undercover in their seemingly ‘red’ neighborhoods finally saw that the tide had turned and contacted us.” She further pointed out that 2012 was the first time that DuPage had ever re-elected a Democratic President. \nOn Sunday February 10th\, Former Mayor of Philly and Governor of Pennsylvania\, Ed Rendell–no stranger to inter and intra-party struggles and challenges–will be in town to talk with the gathered Gala group. Often a controversial voice on MSNBC\, Rendell also has a new book whose title presents a provocative premise: A Nation of Wusses: How America’s Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great \nFormer Governor Rendell has been in politics for nearly 35 years in many roles and was the prototype for the Eric Baker character in the West Wing TV series.

SUMMARY:Special Township Meeting re Citizens United Amendment to US Constitution
DESCRIPTION:Naperville Township has called a special meeting for the purpose of considering the addition of an advisory referendum to the November ballot regarding the United States Supreme Court’s ruling known as Citizen’s United v. Federal Election Commission.  The meeting is to be held on Wednesday\, August 8th\, at 6 PM (be there at 5:30) at the township offices located at 139 Water Street Naper Settlement Pre-Emption House at the corner of Webster and Aurora in Naperville.\n\nThe 2010 Citizens United ruling held that the federal government cannot restrict independent political contributions by corporations or unions. Opponents say the move enables wealthy individuals and groups to exercise undue influence over elections.\n\nChicago\, Lisle Townhip\, Naperville’s City Council\, and 280 other cities and six state legislatures have already passed theMove to Amend Resolution. If interested in this issue\, please consider attending.\n\nPlease note: The location has moved\, and I’ve updated the text above to reflect that.  And although the meeting proper starts at 6:00\, you’ll want to be there by 5:30\, as they need to check names against the voter list.  Steve\n\nOne more udpate (8/8/12): I’m told that I misrepresented the origins of this meeting in my email yesterday when I said it was “put together by township government.”  In fact\, according to Paul Sjordal\, who wrote me to follow up\, “It was called by the 20 plus registered voters in the township that filed a request with the township clerk to call the meeting.”  My apologies to the organizers\, and thanks\, Paul\, for the correction.  Steve.
