{"id":2244,"date":"2014-09-12T13:23:44","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T18:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/napervilledemocrats.org\/ntdo\/?p=2244"},"modified":"2016-05-17T16:32:26","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T21:32:26","slug":"unions-and-the-american-middle-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/napervilledemocrats.org\/ntdo\/unions-and-the-american-middle-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Unions and the American Middle Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Johnathan Cohn did an interesting interview a few weeks ago (just ahead of Labor Day) with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/119272\/labor-day-are-unions-dead-interview-rich-yeselson\">labor strategist and researcher Rich Yeselson<\/a> on the subject of the\u00a0current health of America&#8217;s labor movement. \u00a0Well worth a few minutes of your time.<\/p>\n<p>I was particularly interested\u00a0to see this chart, which bears out my longtime conviction that when unions are stronger, the middle class is healthier. \u00a0 And that&#8217;s the middle class as a whole, whether or not you&#8217;re a union member. \u00a0Putting it another way around, when folks hate on unions and cheer their demise, they&#8217;re encouraging an economy that works only for a few lucky folks at the very top. \u00a0It&#8217;s not a coincidence that the two lines move in opposite directions.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.newrepublic.com\/d34dc3dd83d6707b52d44a115cfb34de3eebe6c0.png?resize=608%2C553&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"553\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>[UPDATE, 5\/2016: I noticed that the image got broken and so I&#8217;ve repaired the link.
