The law has decreased the uninsured population by 20 million so far. It has introduced systemic reforms into the medical economy that have begun bending the cost curve downward. (To take the most easily traceable example, by giving hospitals an incentive to avoid unnecessary and costly patient readmissions, the readmission rate has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/patient-safety-obamacare_us_565dcb8ce4b072e9d1c34a57\">immediately dropped<\/a>, saving both money and needless death.) The government is not only spending less money on health care than it was projected to spend after Obamacare was passed, but it is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/health-care-spending-obamacare_us_57685a1ae4b015db1bca53cf\">spending less<\/a> than it was projected before the law was<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>passed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And of course, lest we forget, Hillary Clinton wants to build on this legacy of success (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/issues\/health-care\/\">&#8220;Defend and expand the Affordable Care Act, which covers 20 million people.&#8221;<\/a>). \u00a0Donald Trump calls it a disaster and promises\u00a0its repeal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.donaldjtrump.com\/positions\/healthcare-reform\">&#8220;On day one of the Trump Administration, we will ask Congress to immediately deliver a full repeal of Obamacare.&#8221;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/powerpost\/paloma\/daily-202\/2016\/09\/14\/daily-202-why-most-think-the-country-is-on-the-wrong-track-despite-positive-economic-indicators\/57d885b9cd249a37b9882e1b\/\">Hohmann&#8217;s summary<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>THE BIG IDEA:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212; An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2016\/demo\/p60-256.pdf\">annual report<\/a> from the Census Bureau includes a raft of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/us-household-incomes-soared-in-2015-recording-biggest-gain-in-decades\/2016\/09\/13\/a832da44-79e0-11e6-ac8e-cf8e0dd91dc7_story.html\">positive economic data<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2015, middle-class families got their biggest pay raises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/rampage\/wp\/2016\/09\/13\/american-families-got-a-huge-raise-in-2015-the-biggest-in-nearly-50-years\/\">in 50 years<\/a>. <strong>Median household income rose 5.2 percent<\/strong> when adjusted for inflation.<\/li>\n<li>There were<strong> 3.5 million fewer Americans living in poverty\u00a0<\/strong>last year than the year before, a 1.2 percent decline, the steepest since 1968.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/uninsurance-rate-drops-to-the-lowest-level-since-before-the-great-recession\/2016\/09\/13\/73ed3f64-7908-11e6-beac-57a4a412e93a_story.html\">4 million gained health insurance<\/a> <\/strong>in 2015, decreasing the nation\u2019s uninsured rate to 9.1 percent, the lowest level since before the Great Recession.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The gender pay gap is at a record low<\/strong>, though women still make an unacceptable 80 cents for every dollar men earn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>&#8212; Other indicators also demonstrate meaningful progress:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> unemployment rate has declined to 4.9 percent<\/strong>. That\u2019s half of what it was at this point seven years ago.<\/li>\n<li>The markets have had a couple rough days, but <strong>all three major stock indexes hit record highs last month<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The University of Michigan\u2019s <strong>consumer sentiment index is near its pre-recession high<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Net private business investment had recovered<\/strong> to pre-recession levels.<\/li>\n<li>The Agriculture Department last week released a data set showing that <strong>the number of Americans who go to sleep hungry declined substantially <\/strong>last year for the first time since the recession.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Home foreclosures continue to drop off markedly.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A glut of oil on the global market means <strong>gasoline is cheap and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/oil-glut-forcasted-into-2017-as-demand-in-asia-is-wobbly\/2016\/09\/13\/c309aaf2-79a7-11e6-bd86-b7bbd53d2b5d_story.html\">will continue to
