The GOP may think climate change is a hoax<\/a>, but scientists who study it know it’s real, and that we are already testing the\u00a0limits to the earth’s resilience. \u00a0(Thanks to my colleague Bryan Alaspa for this reference.)<\/p>\n

As Trump denies climate change, scientists fear we\u2019re about to pass \u2018red line\u2019 where devastation begins<\/a><\/h2>\n

\"paul-souders-polar-bear-ursus-maritimus-leaping-across-pools-of-water-on-melting-fjord-ice-in-sabinebukta-bay-o-218876\"<\/a>WASHINGTON \u2014 A new scientific statement released Thursday \u2014 underscoring the urgency of grappling with global warming \u2014 presented a staggering contrast with the state of public discussion of the subject in the United States.<\/p>\n

Here, in the wake of the first presidential debate, the media skewered Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for denying his prior Twitter claim that \u201cthe concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese\u201d \u2014 even as Trump\u2019s surrogates continued to bluntly advance positions that reject modern scientific knowledge on the subject.<\/p>\n

His campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, for instance, asserted on CNN that Trump believes the current climate swing is \u201cnaturally occurring,\u201d a view amounting to yet another denial of mainstream science.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, a group of seven distinguished climate scientists led by Robert Watson, a former chairman of the United Nations\u2019 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, asserted that the chance of holding warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels \u201chas almost certainly already been missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

And we could very soon be on an irrevocable path to 2 degrees of warming, they continue, unless countries dramatically up their pledges to cut emissions under the Paris climate agreement \u2014 an agreement Trump has said he would \u201ccancel.\u201d<\/p>\n
