I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d say this, but I\u2019m going to say it, and I hate to say it. But if I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation, because there has never been so many lies, so much deception. There has never been anything like it, and we\u2019re going to have a special prosecutor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Hillary Clinton replied that it was \u201cawfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,\u201d Trump quickly added, \u201cBecause you\u2019d be in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway tried to downplay Trump\u2019s threat, later saying it was just \u201ca quip.\u201d However, some prominent lawyers and legal scholars took umbrage at the threat and expressed alarm. Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe told <em>Fortune<\/em> that <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>even threatening such a thing was \u201cincompatible with the survival of a stable constitutional republic,\u201d<\/strong><\/span> while <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>carrying out such a threat would constitute an \u201cimpeachable offense.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/s2\/favicons?domain=www.theatlantic.com\" \/>\u00a0<a class=\"clickable\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/notes\/2016\/10\/trump-time-capsule-136-shed-be-in-jail\/503507\/?utm_source=feed\">Trump Says That If He Wins, Clinton Will &#8216;Be in Jail&#8217; &#8211; The Atlantic<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;<em>You <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesFallows\/status\/785290032747872256\">cannot say this<\/a><\/em>. This is the way tinhorn cult-of-the-personality despotisms work.
