An extreme imminent crisis justified extreme tactics. The risk of becoming Greece outweighed the risk of a debt-limit snafu (though it was not, of course, high enough to justify even a partial repeal of the Bush tax cuts).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now Obama has met them halfway and included some retirement program spending cuts in his budget proposal. \u00a0The Republican response? \u00a0Per the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/gop-moves-away-from-entitlements-and-toward-tax-reform-in-budget-deal\/2013\/04\/27\/a3bfc5ac-add9-11e2-8bf6-e70cb6ae066e_print.html\">Washington Post&#8217;s Lori Montgomery<\/a>;\u00a0\u201cThe proposals, included in the president\u2019s budget request, outraged seniors, and some Republicans fear that embracing them would be political suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2013\/04\/house-republicans-eyeing-new-hostage-opportunity.html\">Chait<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oh! So you threaten to melt down the world economy unless Obama agrees to cut spending on retirement programs, and then he offers to do that, and then you decide it\u2019s\u00a0<i>too unpopular<\/i>?<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The decision that they no longer care about the thing they were prepared to unleash worldwide economic havoc to achieve has not caused them to abandon the debt ceiling as a hostage. (It\u2019s the party\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2013\/03\/gop-has-won-a-budget-battle-not-the-war.html\">Nelson Muntz\u2013ian approach<\/a>\u00a0to resolving policy disagreements: \u201cGotta nuke\u00a0<i>something<\/i>.&#8221;) If obtaining retirement cuts went from so urgent it was worth threatening to nuke the world economy over to &#8220;meh,&#8221; the next step is to figure out the next thing to nuke the world economy over. That thing, the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0reports, is tax reform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>But what is the GOP position on tax reform? It\u2019s that tax reform\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/camp.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=322003\">must cut tax rates and not raise any revenue at all<\/a>. So House Republicans are prepared to refuse to raise the debt ceiling unless Democrats agree to let them cut tax rates without increasing revenue.
