Benedictine University is one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in the country and we are hosting a community day on Thursday, October 9, 2014<\/span> to celebrate and examine \u201cThe Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past, Present and Future<\/strong>\u201d topic, within an historical context. The community day is a luncheon, followed by a panel discussion led by Tallahassee, Florida Mayor John Marks<\/strong>, and features our evening keynote speaker, the Rev. F. The events in Ferguson, Missouri have reminded the nation that the issue of race remains one of the most important and complex issues facing the United States.\u00a0 The signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is legislatively, the most significant action on the issue of race since the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. These two events, the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri, and the signing of the Civil rights Act of 1964, frame the all-community event, \u201cThe Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past, Present and Future.\u201d<\/p>\n
