\"mosque340x200\"<\/a>You may recall our May Community Forum<\/a>, at which Jamil Khoury from Silk Road Rising<\/a> screened a short video introducing us to the characters from their “Mosque Alert”<\/a> play and then led us in a (too brief!)\u00a0discussion. \u00a0It was a fun and challenging evening.<\/p>\n

Apropos of that,\u00a0Dianne and I received the following email the other day from Malik Gillani (Silk Road Rising’s Executive Director, who also joined us that evening), inviting us all to attend the next step in the play’s growing to maturity.<\/p>\n

Dear Dianne and Steve!<\/p>\n

Hope this email finds you in good spirits! I’m writing today to encourage you and our friends at the Naperville Democrats to attend a staged reading of the draft script of “Mosque Alert.” Our presentation for you included sharing a video for play development. The staged reading is to share the entire playscript and to solicit audience feedback.<\/p>\n

The reading will take place at North Central College (Madden Theater, 171 E Chicago Ave, Naperville, IL 60540) on\u00a0Tuesday, October 20th at 7pm<\/span><\/span><\/b>. Here’s the play description:<\/p>\n

Inspired by the “Ground Zero Mosque” controversy in New York City, and developed, in part, via live and online conversations and community events, Mosque Alert tells the story of three fictional families living in Naperville, Illinois, whose lives are interrupted by a proposed Islamic Center on the site of a beloved local landmark. Mosque Alert explores the intersections of zoning, civil rights, and Islamophobia, with humor, family drama, and raw honesty.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

“Mosque Alert” comes out of a civic engagement process we began in 2011 and one which continues through next year. In fact, Silk Road Rising is in residency in Naperville through 2016 as we further develop this play with audience participation. A brochure describing our project is attached to this email.<\/p>\n
