Obamacare Subsidies Mean Big Savings for Americans
As we approach the next rollout milestone for Obamacare this fall, the GOP is becoming more and more desperate to undermine it. You must be getting tired of reading stories about their Chicken-Little-ing over every small hiccup and their cynical efforts to convince people not to insure themselves. I know I am.
So I’m glad when I come across a story like this one, from Jonathan Cohn today. The GOP wants us to believe that most people buying health insurance on their own will be getting a bad deal under Obamacare. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, …
“The law provides a surprising amount of financial relief for people who are buying their own insurance today, not to mention the uninsured, who tend to have lower incomes.” Len Nichols, a health economist at George Mason University, agrees. “In many ways, what the ACA is about is extending premium tax breaks to those without good employer offers today, and doing so through a sliding scale that provides the most help to those who need it most.”
…
…A large portion of people who buy individual coverage through Obamacare are going to be eligible for subsidies. And those subsidies are going to be worth, on average, thousands of dollars per person.
By the way, the subsidies provide the most help to those most in need, but they extend all the way up to four times the poverty line, or about $94,000 for a family of four.
It’ll take you two minutes to read the details in Jonathan’s piece. Well worth the time.
