Flat or Fair? The Case for a Graduated Income Tax Rate

dupagecoffeeLearn the latest about the campaign in support of the State constitutional amendment to allow a graduated income tax in Illinois (HJRCA 33/SJRCA 40).  Current tax policy is neither fair to all taxpayers nor designed to sustain funding of current services into the future. With the sunset of the temporary income tax increase, Illinois will lose $7B over the next eighteen months. Funding for education, public safety, human services, and health care will likely see continued significant reductions. When all taxes are taken into account, as a percentage of income, tax burden on low and middle income families is much greater than on affluent families. A fairer graduated income tax will help to balance this, putting money back in the pockets of those most likely to spend it in the local economy on services their families need. The State Legislature must pass legislation to put a referendum on the Nov 4th general election ballot. Then the voters will decide, embodying an important democratic principle: citizen participation.

Hilary Denk, Co-President of the Downers Grove-Woodridge-Lisle League of Women Voters of Illinois will present the League PowerPoint on this subject and seek participant input and involvement. Martin McAlpin, organizer for A Better Illinois Coalition, of which the League is a member, will suggest concrete actions to move our legislators and to support the amendment.
