Special Township Meeting re Citizens United Amendment to US Constitution
Wednesday, 8/8/2012 @ 5:30 PM
Free

Naperville Township has called a special meeting for the purpose of considering the addition of an advisory referendum to the November ballot regarding the United States Supreme Court’s ruling known as Citizen’s United v. Federal Election Commission. The meeting is to be held on Wednesday, August 8th, at 6 PM (be there at 5:30) at the township offices located at 139 Water Street Naper Settlement Pre-Emption House at the corner of Webster and Aurora in Naperville. The 2010 Citizens United ruling held that the federal government cannot restrict independent political contributions by corporations or unions. Opponents say the move enables wealthy individuals and groups to exercise undue influence over elections.
Chicago, Lisle Townhip, Naperville’s City Council, and 280 other cities and six state legislatures have already passed theMove to Amend Resolution. If interested in this issue, please consider attending.
Please note: The location has moved, and I’ve updated the text above to reflect that. And although the meeting proper starts at 6:00, you’ll want to be there by 5:30, as they need to check names against the voter list. Steve
One more udpate (8/8/12): I’m told that I misrepresented the origins of this meeting in my email yesterday when I said it was “put together by township government.” In fact, according to Paul Sjordal, who wrote me to follow up, “It was called by the 20 plus registered voters in the township that filed a request with the township clerk to call the meeting.” My apologies to the organizers, and thanks, Paul, for the correction. Steve.
