FEMA: A Case Study in the Difference Between Democrats and Republicans
Why is it that when there’s a Republican in the White House, FEMA gets eviscerated and becomes incompetent to handle emergencies? But when there’s a Democrat in the White House, it becomes competent again? We’ve seen the whole cycle – twice! – just in the last 25 years. Here’s Kevin Drum at Mother Jones:
At a deep ideological level, Republicans believe that federal bureaucracies are inherently inept, so when Republicans occupy the White House they have no interest in making the federal bureaucracy work. And it doesn’t. Democrats, by contrast, take government services seriously and appoint people whose job is to make sure the federal bureaucracy does work. And it does.
