Happy Women’s Equality Day
…in my in-box just now, from Governor Quinn:
Steve,
Today is Women’s Equality Day — the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
We’ve come a long way in the 94 years since then, but with politicians and courts still threatening women’s rights to make decisions about their health, it’s clear there’s more work to do.
That’s why I’m proud to tell you that I just signed into law new protections from employment discrimination for mothers-to-be in the state of Illinois.
I fought hard for these protections — no woman should have to worry about facing unfair working conditions just because she decided to start a family.
As an amendment to the Illinois Human Rights Act, the new law ensures that pregnancy cannot be used to discriminate against working women.
Protecting women’s rights and health during pregnancy is a crucial step towards creating a truly equal society.
That’s what I’m fighting for. And I won’t let up.
Happy Women’s Equality Day,
Governor Quinn
