It Was a BBQ Lunch with the Durbin Bunch!

Durbin-MacLeod-30

Senator Durbin chats with former NTDO Chair Bill MacLeod

There were balloons, festive table covers, delicious BBQ brisket and pulled pork, influential labor leaders, Democratic activists from all over DuPage, elected leaders from all levels of local, state and federal government, and Jimmy Buffet’s island ballads wafting over all of it! Of what am I writing? Of course, the annual NTDO fundraiser held on Friday, August 7th! This year we were so honored to have as our special guest of honor none other than our beloved United States Senator Dick Durbin! The Senator was remarkably approachable, spending time at each table of guests, greeting folks, hearing their concerns, receiving small tokens from some, and posing for pictures with everyone!

NTDO/IBEW stalwart Bill Habel greets the senator

A special shout-out to Frank Furco, Business Manager for IBEW 701 who so kindly offered their beautiful facility in Warrenville for our event! IBEW 701 Business Representative and NTDO Precinct 42 Committeeman, Bill Habel, also assisted with arrangements, including procuring a raised platform and microphone for our use! And, of course, the members of the NTDO Executive Committee – Ed Agustin, Deanne SerenoPaul Mandrik, and Steve Purduski – assisted in every aspect of the event, from checking people in and keeping track of the raffle, to helping prepare the lunch buffet, to picking up balloon bouquets and “dressing” the tables! Thank you everyone!

McGuire-Durbin-30

NTDO Chair Dianne McGuire with the senator

The Senator gave an inspiring speech covering many topics including the recent inflammatory discussions coming from the right on the topic of immigration, the push by Republicans to defund Planned Parenth ood, the recent passage of a 3-year highway bill, as well as a bi-partisan education bill for K-12 students. But, he saved his strongest message for those spewing the anti-union rhetoric coming out of Springfield! He highlighted a letter from the governor to the Quad City International Airport administrators in Moline in which Rauner indicated “he would withhold federal funds if it included a project labor agreement in its contract.” He also expressed his appreciation on behalf of all elected Democrats in Illinois who have won their campaigns with the help oforganized labor. In her opening remarks, NTDO Chair Dianne McGuire, recognized the pivotal role that organized labor has had with regard to the creation and maintenance of the middle class in this country.

So, in conclusion, a special thank you to all who attended and enjoyed our special day with the Senator!

[Thanks, as so often, to Dianne for this stellar write-up and for the wonderful images that make it shine.  Steve]

[Please note: An early version of this posting got Bill Habel’s title wrong.  I’ve corrected it above.  Apologies for the error.  Steve]
