More on Last Thursday’s Climate Change Presentations

We were fortunate last Thursday night to receive not one but two presentations on climate change.

Sylvia Hood Washington

Sylvia Hood Washington

First, Dr Washington’s presentation on December’s “COP21” talks (aka the Paris Climate Conference) took us through some of the crucial points of that effort, about which you have no doubt been hearing, and then brought it home to talk about what it means to us, and what we as individuals can do to move things forward. like…

Here’s the note she sent me the next day:

Dear Steve, Just wanted you to know that…

I am grateful for the opportunity to have talked  to Naperville Dems about COP21 and its direct implications on residents in our area.
A number of folks reached out to me after the presentation last night.
Please feel free to share my contact information with them if they want to go deeper into the conversation.

My home # is 630-690-5420 and my cell # is 630-896-8321.

I am also attaching a copy of my PowerPoint presentation that you may share online with the group.
Sincerest Regards
Sylvia

And second, Dr Washington was followed by Greg Hubert, a member of the Fox Valley chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), who spoke to us about a bipartisan “Carbon Fee and Dividend” initiative, a promising effort that aims to create financial leverage around reducing the amount of carbon we are dumping into the atmosphere.  Here is Greg’s note (it was actually two emails which I’ve tried to distill here…):

“We all share responsibility for President Obama’s legacy on climate change”

Greg Hubert, IL Fox Valley chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) http://citizensclimatelobby.org , again expresses his thanks for the opportunity to share his CCL presentation with NTDO last night. Attached is the media document from CCL (both pdf and docx formats) with the embedded links that allow you to click and drill down into other webpages and news stories to learn more.

“Obama’s legacy on climate change is shared by all of us, particularly Congress. As much as the president, we are responsible for the type of world future generations will inherit.”

From my CCL perspective, I look at the President’s CPP and our IL Clean Jobs Bill as step 1. And at the same time, we must continue the efforts to increase our US and other nations’ commitments to get us to the 2 degree Celsius level … and beyond to the latest 1.5 C target in order to help protect future generations from the risks of extreme climate events.

Thank you again.

Greg

Here is Greg’s (short, 3-page) document.  (Plenty of valuable links inside to more details as you’re interested):

Let me just say once again how much we appreciated the time and effort both of our guests invested to come and share their valuable perspectives with us.

Thank you both!
