Precinct Committee Preparedness
NTDO Chair Dianne McGuire provides this superb write-up of last week’s meeting:
The Naperville Township Democratic Organization hosted ten candidates or their representatives at their most recent meeting held on July 31 at the Naperville Municipal Center. The evite invitation was titled: “A Little Shoeleather Goes a Long Way!”
Either present or represented by staff were the following candidates:
- Senator Richard Durbin
- Congressman Bill Foster
- Governor Pat Quinn
- Bob Peickert….Candidate, DuPage County Board Chair
- Mike Quiroz….Candidates, DuPage County Sheriff
- Shannon Burns…..Candidate for Forest Preserve, District 6 (incumbent)
- Laurie Nowak……..Candidate for DuPage County Board, District 6, (incumbent)
- Regina Brent……..Candidate for DuPage County Board, District 5
- Stephanie Kifowit….Candidate for State Rep, District 84 (incumbent)
- Ed Agustin….Candidate for State Rep, District 41
Each briefly addressed the nearly 50 supporters present, in some cases highlighting their accomplishments as an office holder and in others outlining their positions on various key issues.
Following a PowerPoint presentation by the officers of the NTDO and the distribution of a new NTDO Handbook for PC’s and Volunteers highlighting “best practices” for voter contact and getting out the vote, participants were encouraged to visit with the various candidates or their representatives and to volunteer their help. Tantalized with sweet treats (think “potato chip cookies”) to BBQ meatballs, participants made their way from table to table.
By the end of the meeting, all candidates found new supporters to help them in the Naperville township area as they go after the elusive “drop off” voters, the voters who turn out for the general elections in presidential years, but often sit out the midterm elections. 2010 was just such a year! The results are with us yet today, as we view a Congress dominated by the far right, committed to obstructionism and not much else! If we want to assure that our nation continues to move in a progressive direction, it is vitally important that we ALL vote in 2014!
Of special note: September 21 will be a very exciting day for the NTDO! Lisa Madigan, Attorney General for the State of Illinois, will be our Guest of Honor at our annual fundraiser, a cocktail hour reception at Sullivan’s which will be held from 4-6 PM…So put it on your calendar now!
